Survivors of the Garissa University College Massacre arrive in Kisii

Survivors of the Garissa University College Massacre have arrived safely in Kisii County.

The 31 students drawn from various parts of Kisii County arrived in Kisii shortly after 3pm aboard National Youth Service (NYS) buses.

Deputy Governor Joash Maangi and Chief Officer Administration and Stakeholder Management Patrick Lumumba were on hand to receive them at the County headquarters.

Some of the students had alighted earlier at various points along the Keroka/Kisii road. Majority of the survivors were 2nd year students undertaking a degree course in education.

The Deputy Governor condemned the terrorist attack saying the County Government will stand with those affected in this difficult moment.

"It is regrettable that innocent students pursuing education can lose their lives through this terrorist attack. We thank God that some of you have made it home safely," said the DG.

The survivors were given facilitation for their fare home besides receiving psycho-social support from Kenya Red Cross volunteers.

The County Government undertakes to ensure the students receive post trauma counseling and any other support to help them gain normalcy in their lives.

Our help desks at Delta House, Nairobi and at the Kisii County headquarters remain operational throughout this period.

H.E. Governor James Ongwae has directed that his Government will ensure that the affected families will be assisted in meeting expenses associated with burial and counseling for the survivors.

The County Government will also facilitate the students who survived this traumatic experience with subsistence allowance as they rejoin their families.

Regarding the missing students, the Governor has availed resources to assist affected families who are still tracing their loved ones.

Kisii County First Lady Mrs. Elizabeth Ongwae has offered to lead counseling for the students who survived this tragedy.
