Renovation of the Gusii stadium has started. Kisii county Governor James Ongwae said the stadium will meet international standards after the Sh 46 million facelift.
The Governor accompanied by Executive Committee Member (ECM) in charge of Culture, Sports, Youths and Social Services Marcella Otuke and a team of engineers toured the facility and assured locals that the project will be complete in six months.
The Governor said two fences, four daises including a VIP shade, toilets and changing rooms will be constructed. “The main dais will be pulled down and reconstructed as it is very close to the playing field. Each of the daises will accommodate atleast 500 fans,” said Ongwae.
The county government will erect two fences, one around the playing field and another behind terraces to be constructed in phases. The playing field will be watered regularly and its drainage rehabilitated to maintain its standards. The running track also be re-done.
The Governor said the ECM and several engineers recently visited Moi stadium in Kisumu, Mombasa and Nyayo stadiums to bench mark so that they can come up with best designs.
“The contractor has ferried all materials to the site and work has started. The renovation will greatly help Shabana FC as the team will generate revenue during sporting activities,” observed Ongwae adding that the project will nurture upcoming talents in the region.
The Gusii stadium which hosts Kenya Premier League is rated among the best five in the country.
