Suneka Airstrip is set for a major facelift with the national government setting aside funds for its construction.
In his budget speech, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich announced Sh 1.65 billion has been set aside to fund the construction of three new airports at Mandera, Malindi and Suneka.
In a memorandum presented to President Uhuru Kenyatta by Governor James Ongwae when he visited Kisii County last week, Gusii leaders had asked that the critical airstrip be modernized to allow for commercial flights.
Already, a number of aviation companies have approached the Kisii County Government seeking management rights to run the airstrip. A feasibility study conducted by the national government shows the airstrip is viable for commercial use.
The County Government thanks the National Government for acceding to this request and hopes for speedy implementation of the project to benefit locals.
