The Kisii County Government will meet the funeral and medical expenses for the victims of the lightning strike at Ibencho.
Last week, three people lost their lives after being struck by lightning as they sheltered from heavy rains during a funeral at Mochorwa village in Bomachoge Chache
Sub County. One other victim sustained serious injuries and is still admitted at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The three deceased persons identified as Edward Ayiera Machuka, Josephine Bwari Akunga and Bosibori Obwoge will be buried on Friday this week. Speaking in his office after meeting the committee organizing the funeral, Governor James Ongwae announced that his government had set aside KShs.350, 000 to cater for the medical and burial expenses.
Each of the deceased person’s families will receive KShs.100, 000 while the family of the victim undergoing treatment will receive KShs.50, 000. Ongwae who was flanked by his Deputy Joash Maangi and other senior officials said his government will meet the expenses for a hearse, mortuary fees, casket, chairs, tents, PA system and other expenses related to the funerals.
“Last week’s incident was unfortunate as it occasioned the untimely demise of our people. We stand with the families of the deceased and this is why we have decided to support them in this difficult moment,” said Ongwae.
Andrew Kiboi (chairman), Benson Obwoge (secretary) and Charles Nyarumi (treasurer) spoke on behalf of the committee. Mr Kiboi thanked the Governor for his gesture saying the families faced challenges in raising funds to meet funeral costs because they came from the same extended family.
“On behalf of the committee, I would like to thank the Governor for your kind gesture,” said Kiboi.
