The County Government has partnered with Chase Bank and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) to give Daraja Mbili Market a facelift. The market is the second biggest market in Nyanza region after Kisumu’s Kibuye market. It attracts traders from as far as Tanzania every Sunday and Thursday.
The facelift will involve construction of a flyover, parking space, modern stalls, retail and wholesale components, washrooms and high mast floodlights among others. Modernising of the market will increase employment opportunities and revenue while improving the livelihoods of both traders and their clients.
Chase Bank will fund the project at Sh 400m while JKUAT will provide architectural designs.
The ultimate plan is to make Daraja Mbili market operate daily like Kongowea market in Mombasa County.
